Anas said, "I went to the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, carrying an invitation to some barley bread and flavored oil, for he had pawned his shield with a Jew for twenty ṣā' (1) of food, which he took to his family and I had heard him say once, 'There has not been a night when there was a ṣā' of dates or a ṣā' of grain in the household of Muḥammad,' peace and blessings of God be upon him. And, he had nine wives, at the time (2)."
(1) A ṣā' is a dry measure approximately equivalent to 2600 grams. (2) This is an indication that the Prophet was not rich and hardly had enough food let alone excess food in his household.
